erupted, spewing hot ash several kilometres into the air.  <\/p>\n<p>A code red alert was issued after Mount Etna in Italy exploded earlier today, warning it could disrupt flights.<\/p>\n<p>The eruption sent a pyroclastic flow \u2013 the same mix of hot rock, ash and gas that destroyed Pompeii \u2013 hurtling down the side of the mountain, possibly from the collapse of part of the crater.  <\/p>\n<p>Footage shows dozens of tourists running for their lives, dwarfed by the huge clouds of smoke erupting behind them.  <\/p>\n<p>Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology\u00a0said an ash cloud, mainly made up of water and sulphur dioxide, was drifting south west.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div continue to be felt in the area and the flow of hot material remains confined to one area, the Leone Valley.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There is also a small lava overflow at the southern edge of the crater, with some lava flowing towards the Bove Valley.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Etna has been incredibly active throughout the first half of 2025, with lava bombs and fountains bursting out.  <\/p>\n<p>Last month, glowing lava burst out and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.volcanodiscovery.com\/etna\/current-activity.html\">poured down the mountain<\/a>, with dramatic images showing the fiery
