A transatlantic flight to New York<\/a> was forced to make an emergency landing after a passenger with a severe shellfish allergy claimed to have been served shrimp.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Doreen Benary, 41, says she flagged the ailment to cabin crew in the Singapore Airlines flight from Germany<\/a>, which had to be diverted to France<\/a> on October 8 last year.<\/p>\n

She became \u2018violently ill\u2019 and was rushed for \u2018emergency medical treatment at two separate medical facilities\u2019, according to a federal lawsuit.<\/p>\n

Benary, who works as a physician, is now seeking \u2018full, fair and reasonable damages\u2019, claiming the \u2018adverse reaction to shrimp and the consequential injuries suffered\u2019 were the carrier\u2019s fault.<\/p>\n

Her complaint states she told flight attendants she had a food allergy, \u2018specifically to shrimp\u2019, after taking her seat in the business class cabin, according to the Independent<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u2018Despite the aforesaid warnings, during the course of the subject flight\u2019s meal service, a member of [the] cabin crew served [Benary] a meal containing shrimp,\u2019 it adds.<\/p>\n

But she was \u2018unaware\u2019 of the ingredient \u2018until she had ingested a portion\u2019 of it, the file claims, and \u2018nearly immediately\u2019 fell \u2018violently ill, requiring the aircraft to perform an emergency diversion to Paris\u2019.<\/p>\n

Doreen\u2019s complaint claims it was the cabin crew\u2019s responsibility to \u2018be aware of the seriousness\u2019 of passengers\u2019 food allergies and to \u2018respond appropriately\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u2018Thus, when a cabin crew member was placed on notice of a passenger\u2019s food allergy, said crew member had a duty of care to ensure that meals containing such allergens or their ingredients were not served to that particular passenger,\u2019 it adds.<\/p>\n

Her lawsuit claims \u2018she questioned the flight attendant who admitted that she had made an error and apologised\u2019.<\/p>\n
